I concur. I have carefully examined the "free" Borland c++ 5.5 compiler. The
documentation is deliberately crippled. Many links in the help file are
broken, in particular all references to details of the command-line options.

The compiler looks promising, but without this essential data, one is led to
the conclusion that it is a transparent marketing ploy, not a real
contribution to the family of free C++ compilers.

On Borland's site there is no online support whatsoever -- not a word.

This "free" offering may backfire for Borland. The C++ developer community
is accustomed to a higher level of dedication and openness, even(*) for a
free application.

* one is tempted to say "especially" for a free application.

======================================= MODERATOR'S COMMENT:

This thread originated in an on-topic post, but it has steadily
been drifting away from anything relevant to comp.std.c++. I
suggest moving it to comp.lang.c++.moderated.

Borland recently posted on their support server (at forums.borland.com) that
the help had not been deliberately crippled, they are aware of the problem,
and will fix it. They also claim it works on some machines, although one
of those machines is certainly not mine.

Sorry to prolong a OT thread, but I think there is an unintentional
misrepresentation here that I wish to correct. If you post examples of
missing links, I can check them against the commercial version help.
Very likely these are links that were not deliberately croppled, but
rather links that are crippled in the commercial version too. Now you
see what we Borland customers have to put up with ( heavy heavy sigh )
:(

There are no C++ compilers which implement all of the standard. Go to
egcs.cygnus.com and look around for the cygwin32 package.

Check

http://www.borland.com/bcppbuilder/freecompiler/

For the Borland C++ 5.5 compiler. It's free and one of the most ANSI
compliant compilers available for Windows.

However, it comes with no documentation and is therefore useless to
anyone who doesn't already have the commercial version.

Not true. The distribution contains a directory Help, where the command line
tools are described.

Only described; not explained in detail. There are no details of the
command line options for either the compiler or linker. Despite several
hours of trial and error, I never managed to get a nontrivial
application successfully compiled and linked with BCC.
