Short answer: C++ evolved from C, when Bjarne Stroustup at Bell
Labs wanted to add the Simula "class" feature to the C programming
language. In C (and in C++), "++" is the increment operator. So
"C++" can be interpreted as an increment to C. Mostly it is just
a pun.

Longer answers:

Stroustrup, Bjarne
"The C++ Programming Language", 3rd edition
Addison-Wesley (see the Preface and the Introduction)

Stroustrup, Bjarne
"The Design and Evolution of C++"
Addison-Wesley (whole book)

See the Introduction to the book "The Annotated C++ Reference Manual" by

/The Design and Evolution of C++/ by Bjarne Stroustrup

Warning: this book is not for a beginner C++ programmer. It will mean a
lot more to you if you have a bit of experience, say a few months anyway.

C++ primer by Lippman is one of the good book I can suggest for
learning C++. And this topic is already discussed in the newsgroup and
if you see the old articles you may find some more info about books. If
you are very specific about Visual C++, Inside Visual C++ from
Microsoft press is a good one. And moreover I can suggest you to post
articles with proper subject to comp.lang.c++ during the starting
period. In that way you may be able to get more info. This group is
meant for discussing the standards of C++.

Hi Everyone,

My problem is that I am only starting out on C++ and don't really
understand the theory of objects. Also, every example C++ procedure I
see has a new datatype in it...Can any one suggest a good book I should
get, or a video or something, especially to do with objects...of course
if any of you could spare ten minutes of your time to drop me a line it
would be much appreciated..at the moment I am programming in VB and I
have used Pascal, so I know the basics.

Thanks

John.

I would like to find out more about C++. I might start a course and would
like to know more about it. I am new in the Internet also and don't know
how to use it well. Any information would be fine.
