I just tried calling both places. With ANSI, I got placed on a long
automatic hold (never did speak to a human) and finally gave up. Global
Engineering Documents does not offer the document under that document number
or title and has no listing for any such document to be available in the
future.
So, Ron's original complaint about the FAQ being incorrect is valid. I have
been unable to get a copy of the document by using the information in the
FAQ.

The information I have from ANSI is that once a document has
been submitted by ISO to ANSI for voting, anyone can buy a
copy from ANSI. (And normally that means you can also get a
copy from Global Engineering Documents.)
I have two versions of the document number:
ISO/IEC FDIS 14882
ISO/IEC FDIS 14882:1998(E)
In either case, the title is
Programming Language - C++

I looked at the FAQ and decided to get a copy of the FDIS. The
FAQ claims the draft dated December 1997 is the Final Draft
International Standard, and lists two sources.
First stop, ANSI. "We don't have drafts. If it's not approved, we
won't sell it." Really? It says right here on the Web that I can
buy it from you, and maybe you would have it because it's
the final draft or something. Long time on hold. "Sir, can I
get your number and call you back? There are many hits
and I'm going to have to do research and talk to someone else."
Next stop, Global Engineering Documents. "Do you have the
document number?". Well, no, the FAQ didn't really have that
anywhere that I could see. "Ok, the only hit I'm getting on
X3J11 is this C++ draft standard <blah blah>." Sounds, plausible,
what's the date on that? "December 1996". Hmmm, well I guess
I don't want to pay bucks for something that might be a year
older than what I'm really trying to buy -- do you have anything
that's dated December 1997? "No." Are you sure what you
have there doesn't have a newer date of December 1997? "This
is all we have and it is December 1996.". Ok, thanks.
So, has anyone out there actually ordered the Dec97 FDIS and, if so,
would they care to contribute some tips to the FAQ that would
help me repeat their success (or at least understand why I can't
buy what I think the FAQ claims I can)?
Thanks,
Ron Burk

Hmmm... I suppose you could try ordering X3J16/97-0108 and see
what you get. It's not quite identical to the FDIS, but it's
real, real close.
