Topic: Java Class Library

Does it make any sense to try to use some of the tested classes from
the Java class library (see: http://java.sun.com) as input to the
ANSI C++ Standards process.
Obviously, Java and C++ are not "pin for pin" compatible but the tested
Java class library may be able to provide some long-term vision for the
C++ standards effort which people will have to live with for a long time.
I can understand if it is too late for any of the Java work to be used
but it is better to ask the question and find this out then to not have
asked. Also, one would hope that any ANSI (or ISO) standards process
would take into consideration all of the available technology so that
the standard embodies the "best" collection of ideas and contributions.
There has been talk on the Java mailing list(s) of ANSI Standard Java
so this may discourage useful combining. In a way, this would be a shame
because clearly now that people are trying to migrate and use the OO
features of C++, they could use some good models to best understand the
pluses and "minuses" of C++. (Maybe it should have been C+-...:)
Also, there is an RFD being discussed for a new newsgroup called,
comp.lang.java. This should be a good forum to discuss how the Java work
can be used to help C++. At the rate that the Java class library is
coming together and because of wide-spread interest on the Internet,
it is likely that the Java class library will become more of a standard
than the collection of C++ class libraries that currently exist.
Hopefully, the ANSI (and ISO) C++ committee members are studying the
Java work to see if anything can be applied. I would think that this
would be part of their minimum "social responsibility" as a member of
such an important group.
