Does this look as bad as I think it does? Jim Fleming with a new religious
fervour, spouting nonsense with 'OO' in the subject? At least C+@ was pretty
specific and kill-files handled it just fine...

What is the net coming to...

Robert C. Martin has been kind enough to supply us with the following list
of people that he acknowledges for his contributions to the field of OO.

We are going to try to develop an object-oriented application program that
will take such lists and will create a "home" page for the World Wide Web
which has as many references as possible to people that have been
responsible for the promotion of the object industry. We hope to call this
tool or service...Web-OO-Matic...

The idea is to model people like planets that orbit in space. We would
like to add some large masses which represent for example C++, Eiffel,
and Smalltalk. There might also be masses for publications like books
and magazines. Also, certain companies will also be added to the model
because in some cases, a person only has significance if they work for
a particular company. If they resign, they lose much of their mass.

Hopefully, we can create a model which can accept inputs from the Web
and other places. These inputs can be used to give the masses small bursts
of energy. After a period of time, we should be able to create a 3D
display of where the masses are moving and how the object solar system
is doing. This will help people to "track" the industry and if JAVA is
used, maybe we can view the data in real-time....http://java.sun.com

Any lists would be greatly appreciatted. At the moment we are still trying
to obtain the list of members of the ANSI C++ Standards Committee...
BTW...the ANSI committee will be modeled as a planet...it does not have
much mass but it has a lot of clout...figure that out...

There is clearly a lot of overlap in the lists but that is OK. In some
sense you could view the following list as all of the people that have
visited the Robert C. Martin planet. Once Web-OO-Matic is running we will
likely find that many people visit many of the same planets.

Also, the movement of the masses toward each other will depend on various
changing relationships. For example, Parc Place and Digitalk just merged,
this is like two planets colliding. It would have been interesting to
see if the Web-OO-Matic system would have predicted this collision in
advance of the event.

In order for any model to be accurate, it has to have good data and has
to been updated on a regular basis. Hopefully, the Internet will be ONE
source of data. There are many more sources. Hopefully, we can feed as
much data into the system to get a good handle on how the OO planets are
aligned.

BTW, I am not sure what we will do with single names. This seems to be
a trend in the OO industry. People refer to people with "handles". I
guess in some cases these names could represent the same person. If it
is a case like Mark Twain and Samuel Clemmons, we will have to have a
concept of a pen-name or alias in our system.

Also, there are many Web Crawler packages and other search engines on
the "net". They should be very useful for coming up with data to feed
into Web-OO-Matic.

As the system takes shape, it will be interesting to see if Smalltalk is
still on an Island as depicted in BYTE magazine in the early 80's. I
suspect that C++ will end up being an entire galaxy. There will probably
be some interesting star pAT&Terns that we can view in the night sky...:)

...with a sextant you can figure out where you are...
...with a GPS you can figure out where the government says you are...
...with a Web-OO-Matic you can figure out where you do not want to be...
for example...this week, New York was not a good place to be...
...come the Fourth of July...it might be a good sailing area...:)
