Now Jim, I wish you'd spend more time being informative
like this instead of waffling on.

For people interested in how various standards come about. There is some
interesting discussion in the book "Graphics File Formats" by C. Wayne Brown
and Barry J. Sheperd, 1995, Manning Publications Co., ISBN 0-13-303405-4.

Even though this book covers graphics standards, some of the comments on
the general standards process apply to the ANSI C++ Standards work. The
following excerpt from page 51 seems to describe how C++ has navigated
through the various standards waters.

"An economic theory proposed by Brian Arthur* and specifically
applied to standards by Eileen McGinnis** seems to exaplain nicely
hoe the marketplace often chooses standards. The theory is called
economic positive feedback and it works as follows. Given a new
technology, many vendors will begin to introduce systems that
exploit that technology. Each system begins initially to capture
an approximately equal share of the market. At some point one
system will gain a slight advantage over the other systems and
bring in excess capital funds. These funds are then used to enhance
the system, giving it an advantage over the other systems. The
feedback loop continues and the system gains prominence as further
enhancements generate further sales and income. If the system that
obtained the initial advantage was the best technological system,
then all is well. But if the system was not the best, or if the
extra capital funds are not used for system enhancement but rather
for marketing and promotions, then the marketplace has been diverted
down an inferior path. As we stated earlier, the establishment of
standards depends on economic and political issues as well as
 technological issues."

Thanks...it is good to be here...:)

By the way (BTW)...has anyone been able to come up with a standard C++
String class yet?

I know that 10 years ago you folks were working on that. How is it going?

After you get the String class worked out, what is the next class that
you folks intend to tackle?
