For those that have asked whether "The Moment of Silence" is over...

Yes, the DRAFT Standard for THE C++ Programming Language has been out
now less than one week...no one seems to have noticed...the bandwidth
of the Internet seems to have absorbed the shock without a hitch...

...I would say that the "Moment of Silence" is over...
 ...that ended April 30th... :)

It appears that there will not be much interest in the "Draft" Standard.
The initial pulse of the "net" seems to be that most people are happy
that the target has finally stopped moving...

Stopping this moving target is very key...the designers and promoters can
no longer make claims to be all things to all people...they can no longer
make any substantial changes because that would open the door to allowing
other people to suggest changes...this allows the rest of the world to
move forward...C++ can not follow us...it now joins the ranks of Fortran,
COBOL, PL/I, etc...the future belongs to JAVA, C+@, and other emerging
languages...

When I first heard about this plan to box the C++ people in a corner over
two years ago, I must admit that I was skeptical...recently, it has appeared
that "they" would avoid being cornered and would not plant their flag...
I take my hat off to those people at AT&T and AT&T Bell Labs who encouraged
this plan "to box C++ in a corner"...it appears to have worked...

...mission accomplished...:)))....the moment of silence is over...

Now...we can get some real work done...(:@)

Good-bye everyone...good luck with The ANSI Standard for C++...

...Hey!...E.T. - Phone Home, we are out of here....!!!

This is too good to be true. Fleming is finally going to shut up!

Excellent.

Hopefully this is not just a really, really good dream.

This isn't funny in its form, nor in any applicability to any actual
events. It _is_ an excellent indication of the attitude that leads
one to make a nuisance of himself because he cares neither for the
respect of others nor for any _truth_ other than what he cares to see.

I agree wholeheartedly. I find Jim Flemmings postings to this forum
more and more annoying. As some of you probably know I'm not a
particular friend of C++ as a programming language, and sometimes I
even get carried away a bit myself and post something intended to make
fun of it. However, for the most part I believe that only a debate on
the grounds of reasons can bring us any further. Irony and sarcasm
are sometimes useful, but downright stupidity never is.

Jim Flemming's articles serve the purpose of discrediting himself and
everybody who seems to be `on his side'. This includes everybody who
has something to say against C++. I don't know what his real agenda
is, but if he really is convinced that other languages are better
suited to programming than the one this newsgroup is named after then
he doesn't do his own cause any good.

I can only speak for myself, but it is my belief that most people who
really have serious objections against C++' spirit or its concrete
realization will not agree with Jim Flemming's attitude.

Regards,

<cha-ching> oops another penny's worth of crap hits the killfile again...

People... simply ignore his presence... if he doesn't realize that his constant
barrage of drivel is making "Unir" lose any sort of crediblity on the net, that's
his problem. Not ours.

C+@ may be good... but Mr. Flemming has destroyed any chance
of me ever recommending to anyone in Motorola that they should use it.

Goodbye Mr. Flemming.

You first. PLEASE!!

... the first sensible comment I've read from Jim Fleming is
his own suggestion that he not inflict himself on those two
USENET groups any more.

Unfortunately, I have to report on the various activities.
How else will people know when the DRAFT standard is ready?

Do you think we are going to watch for smoke signals from
the Vatican?

Sun's own Steve Clamage (clamage@Eng.Sun.COM) recently called for
everyone to stop posting and then issued several posts. What is going
on? Just because Sun is hosting the next C++ ANSI meeting in
Monterey California does not mean that you folks should all of a
sudden bone up on your C++. From what I have been told, there is
little chance that any changes will be made. You might as well
go enjoy a round of golf with Scott at Pebble Beach.

Attention everyone...Can I have your attention please?....

We would like to call for a "Moment of Silence"...

...between now and the end of April...During this period
we ask that you please no longer post to comp.lang.c++ as
well as comp.std.c++

This period of time will be used to unveil the new and
improved, forthcoming, DRAFT, standard of the joint ANSI/ISO
C++ Programming Language, Class Library, New Testament and
other miscellaneous bits and bytes.

We interrupt this news and go Live to C+N+N...

...Hold on...quiet please...Pope Bjarne is entering the
room...I will hide in the corner and report what I see...

(in a low voice barely audible)..."Pope Bjarne is moving
toward an altar surrounded by a dozen Cardinals and Bishops...
...he has a big gold book...(this must be the Standard)...
..he places the book on a huge marble altar and slowly
opens it as the Bishops all kneel...The Cardinals are
assembled close to the altar...their faces are somber...
they get to stand...that is their priviledge...

...as the book opens the wind begins to howl and the
sanctuary becomes as bright as the lights at Wrigley Field...
...OH MY!!!...folks you would not believe this...out
of the book pops a tiny wizard that looks like Dennis...
he is short and fat and has a purple robe with stars
pasted all over the back...he has an old wand that looks
like it was made in 1975...(I am going to try to move
closer to get a better look)...

DjARNe, Dennis sees me...and smiles...something is going
on here...AHHHH, I can see the book...it has a list of
names...Dennis is whispering to Bjarne who nods at every
word and is starting to sweat...Dennis points out some
names...Bjarne takes out a pen and draws a bold line
through the names...Bjarne is starting to cry...

Hold on...the book is closing...Bjarne is now chanting...
the sanctuary grows dim...(I return to my original spot)
...Now Bjarne is moving around to the front of the
altar...he is standing in front of one of the Cardinals...
this looks like Nats...he is crying...Bjarne rips off
his beannie...Nats falls to the ground and disappears
into a vapor...next it is Bor....he looks like Friar Tuck..
once again..the same events, off goes the beannie...

Bjarne returns to the Altar...the chorus rises and music
fills the air....the book is closed...all of the Cardinals
and Bishops...are moving out of the sanctuary...

DjARNE-it...here I thought it was THE standard being
unvieled for public comment...just a few firings at THE labs...
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
We resume our posting...

Again, please refrain from posting in comp.lang.c++ or
comp.std.c++ until the end of April...

THE DRAFT Standard of The C++ Programming Language is
going to be released soon and we will need ALL of the
bandwidth we can muster to support the transmission of
the standard around the world...as well as the public
comments...

Thank you for your cooperation in these matters...

Yo Jim, I understand that hostility is a sign of sexual frustration

is so lame it makes Saturday Night Live look funny in comparison (hey
wait, have you been moonlighting as a scriptwriter for them this
season? no *wonder* they've been so bad...).
