Well, I wasn't one of the people "voting", but -
haven't you ever heard of a "straw poll"?

First of all, there has not been any official process started to
change this newsgroup's name (actually, add a new group). I don't
know what the hell all you people "voting" think your're
accomplishing.

No, that is not the appropriate group for discussion about using Turbo
C++ or making noise with the PC speaker. If you had read
comp.lang.c++'s FAQ, you would know to instead recommend
comp.os.msdos.programmer or comp.os.ms-windows.programmer.tools.  If
more people read the c.l.c++ FAQ, and encouraged the practice in
general, we wouldn't have such a problem in comp.std.c++ -- I find
that most people who post inappropriately here also post copies of
their articles to comp.lang.c++ (whose FAQ does mention that
comp.std.c++ is intended for discussion directly related to the
evolving ANSI/ISO C++ Standard).

Since comp.std.c has survived inappropriate posts for several years
without having to change its name, I really don't think comp.std.c++
needs to be changed. I don't like the idea of introducing such an
inconsistency with other comp.std.language-name newsgroups.  I don't
think anyone here has made enough of an effort to do something about
the noise (eg, posting a monthly reminder/faq titled "READ THIS BEFORE
POSTING"). I don't like the idea of using such official-sounding
committee names because this is not an official newsgroup. And, I
don't think the signal/noise ratio in comp.std.c++ is low enough to
warrant such a drastic change.

What about putting a "carrot" in the net to catch the newbies as "rabbits"?

If I started nowadays to learn C++ and I had a News connexion, I probably
could search for all the groups containing the string "c++" and afterwards
suscribe to them. A suggesting name of Newsgroup as "comp.newbie.c++"
is too much atractive to leave it out.

Let's do comp.newbie.c++, where it could be periodically posted the
starting information "READ THIS BEFORE POSTING". It's not a solution as
radical (neither efective) as comp.std.X3J16... but it could enlight a
great amount of new users about what are the current groups for.

It won't be a discussion group (unless they want to share desesperation
about their unknow programming environment :-) but a good starting point.

Yes. That *is* in fact *exactly* what I want. (I am, of course, only
speaking for myself.)

This group was chartered for discussions of the evolving C++ standard.
The millions of dweebs who just want to find out how to write a turbo C++
program to make their PC speaker beep have their own newsgroup already.
It's called comp.lang.c++.
