Topic: What are "incompatible pointers" and ...?

I'm working on compiling a program on a Unix system and am getting several
instances of warning messages about incompatible pointer types. Either it's

a) Initialization from incompatible pointer type
b) assignment from incompatible pointer type
c) comparison between pointer and integer
d) passing arg 4 from incompatible pointer type.

So...what are incompatible pointer types? Anyone who can enlighten me as
to how/if I can fix this will be greatly appreciated.
As a side note... wouldn't things like this come up whenever the authors
tested their programs, or what causes these glitches if the program was
written for a Unix system to begin with. I am compiling with 'gcc' if that
helps. Thanks.
