Several members have stated $600/year, complaining over the increase
from last year.
I was only billed $300. Could it be that the second $300 is strictly
for US members? (Yes, I am a member of ANSI, even though I am not US
based.)

Suppose one had interest in joining X3J16. Can this still happen? How?
What are the responsibilities of committee members?
How often do committees/subcommittees meet? Where do they meet?
What would be the duration of the commitment?
Does it cost money?
If one is to convince his/her company to pay, can you help justify the
cost by listing a few benefits of membership?

Membership is open to any interested party. I have a message in to find
out the exact procedure; I'll post it when I get it. Essentially, you have
to write a letter to some committee or other and be prepared to pay $600/year.
> What are the responsibilities of committee members?
To be allowed to vote at a meeting, you must have attended one of the
previous two meetings. Voting members are also expected to accept work
assignments given out at the meetings.
> How often do committees/subcommittees meet? Where do they meet?
Three times a year, with one meeting usually outside North America.
Past meetings have been in places like Palo Alto, Portland, Seattle,
Boston, Nashua, London, Toronto, and Lund (Sweden). The next meeting
is in Munich. Meetings are an entire week and are **exhausting**.
> What would be the duration of the commitment?
As much as you can stand.
> Does it cost money?
Membership is presently $600/year. This covers a principal representative
and an alternate. The cost is minor compared to the cost of attending meetings,
which is typically in the $1,500-$2,500 range depending on distance. The
overseas meetings can be more.

It's the only real way to influence the eventual standard.
