Topic: Embedded SG

Hi,
I am interested in the creation and participation of an embedded SG where=
low level, hardware related issues can be addressed.
For example, the standarization of addressing of alignment problems, byte o=
rdering and swapping, alignment memory access, ISRs, device drivers and ini=
tialization, BSPs development and general needs that usually arise in the R=
TOS and embedded critical systems domains.
I've been working in these domains for 15+ years now, both in C and C++ and=
the same problems occur again and again requiring ad-hoc, C and nonstandar=
d solutions.
I have a number of proposals indeed.
If there is interest, what would the next steps be?
Thanks,
Daniel.

I'm not totally sure but I think you should talk to Herb Sutter about that.

First step is having a chair for the SG and having enough interested
people so that the "critical
mass" of the SG is sufficient, and the step after that is talking to Herb.

What does 'having a chair' mean? E.g. Nominating myself?

How did things work out during and after the development of TR 18015? Is it impossible to "round up the usual suspects"?
It's hard to imagine that the interest evaporated.
Also, lack of portable endianness conversion is annoying to anything that touches the network in binary. These days, that's a lot of things, not only embedded.

I would be interested in participating in a Embedded SG, or a differently
named one that addresses the mentioned concerns. Unfortunately I can not
commit to attending the committee meetings.

Yes, I have the backing of my employer besides my own interest.
I will proceed to write to Herb Sutter.
Thanks!

Hi,
I would be interested in participating in an embedded SG, though I am not
sure I could attend conferences.

There's no need for everyone in an SG to attend committee meetings,
but I believe we do need one or two people to attend in order to
present the results of your discussions. It sounds like Daniel Gutson
is willing and able, so that's great. He's right that the next step is
probably to contact Herb.
(Also note that we now have network-byte-order conversions in the
Fundamentals TS:

Since I work for an Embedded RTOS company, I will probably get involved in
this SG as well.

As I'm also doing embedded C++ development, I want to participate on an
embedded Sig, too.

Markus

I'm interested, but due to already having to be in at least 3-4 places
simultaneously
at any time during any standards meeting, I can't imagine being able
to participate much. :)

Hi
I know, it's a standard C++ discussion group, and it's not a place to
ask you about implementation/IDE/compilers.
Recently, I have involved with two embedded system programming
projects: One for ARM Processors and another Microchip PIC
micro-controllers. I faced to lot of C compilers and lack of good C++
compilers. At least the C compilers are much more available. I think
the lack of C++(11) compilers or lack of interests of embedded
processors companies to produce C++ compilers is big issue in embedded
system programming in C++.
BTW, I'm looking for good (and preferably free) C++11 compilers for
embedded system programming like ARM and Microchip processors. As you
know, there are big fight about C or C++ is better for embedded system
programming. I believe C++ is much better, but I can't find good
compilers or at least I don't know. If you offer a good C++98 compiler
is OK too.
Do you know?
TIA,

I believe in C++, but not C++98. It should be at least C++11.
I strongly believe that appropriate use of Meta Programming can lead to
more compact code than C by means of early calculating deterministic values
at compile time. The problem in embedded industry is due to mental inertia
of traditional micro-controller programmers.
By the way, ARM already supports C++. Both keil and EWARM IDE`s are capable
of compiling C++ modules.

FM.
