Topic: How do I make one of those proposal documents?

I wanted to write up the [[unreachable]] attribute proposal, since at least
this mailing list didn't hate it, but I don't know the process involved.
I've written a document containing what I'd like to say, but it's not
formatted at all (it's literally a .txt file). So I have a series of
questions about it:

1. What format should such documents be written in? I don't know HTML,
Latex, or PostScript, but could learn if I had to. Something tells me that
Microsoft Word documents are *not* the preferred format.

2. What sort of consensus does this need to get prior to filing as a formal
proposal?

3. Does this sort of thing need to go through CWG?

4. Do I need to get opinions from prominent people first?

Thanks,

Melissa

Have you tried https://isocpp.org/std/submit-a-proposal as a starting point?

Text file are not necessarily bad if they have sufficient content.

If you send a proposal, though, you should envision either coming to a
meeting to present it, or having someone who goes to a meeting champion it
for you. We normally can't find the time to process every paper, so being
there to explain it really helps.

Good luck!

Hi Myriachan!

A first guide is given here

https://isocpp.org/std/submit-a-proposal

but I confess that not answers are provided and some information
pieces are missing, so my general recommendation is to contact the
lwgchair address. Usually it will me who will respond to this kind of
request.

> I've written a document containing what I'd like to say, but it's not

The following formats are accepted:

1) pdf
2) html
3) plain text

With plain text we really mean plain text, not MarkDown for example
with an md extension.

> 2. What sort of consensus does this need to get prior to filing as a formal
> proposal?

I don't understand the question. The above quoted page recommends that
you discuss this here and try to get feedback. If you get in principle
positive feedback (Noone will control this, this is your own
judgement, not everyone needs to be happy), this is a good argument to
request a document number form the lwgchair address and proceed.

> 3. Does this sort of thing need to go through CWG?

It is surely reasonable to add CWG, but at first it should be looked
at by EWG. In the proposal there is now a new document header Audience
required, which allows a *list* of working/study groups. Just add both
of them.

> 4. Do I need to get opinions from prominent people first?

No, I would say it is sufficient when previous discussion on this
reflector gave you support for the idea.

If you have any further questions, just ask!

Thanks,

- Daniel

Did you get someone to present it? I saw it in the mailing, but it's a
harder sell without a champion. There are people sharing your views, so I'm
sure it can be managed. I don't know if we'll fit it in for this week
(there's about a day before we vote, so it's a bit late) but Toronto's in
July so you might have time to arrange something.

Good luck!

Have you considered some form of markup language? Markdown is pretty good
and simple to use. And with a tool like Pandoc
<https://www.google.com/search?q=Pandoc&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8>, you can convert
it to various other markup forms.

You need to provide an author name to the document header, e.g. Myriachan.

I double-checked and we don't accept .md files. Of-course you could
write a .txt file that takes advantage of some MarkDown features, but
the rule is that for plain text formats no specific viewer is required
to interpret it.

A quick way to get reasonably nice formatted code examples is to write in
markdown and use pandoc to translate this to html or pdf (requires a LaTeX
installation, but no LaTeX knowledge on your part). In general, the PDF
version is more robust to non-ASCII characters such as the Daniel Krugler's
surname (sorry, Umlaut not easy to type on this machine).

Examples
https://github.com/rhalbersma/xstd/blob/master/doc/N4254.md
http://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg21/docs/papers/2014/n4254.html
https://github.com/rhalbersma/xstd/blob/master/doc/P0330R0.md
http://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg21/docs/papers/2016/p0330r0.pdf

Note that I got feedback from Walter E. Brown on my first draft to number
sections, give a change history (only relevant for revisions) and much
more. He also was generous enough to offer to present it to the Committee,
which he did on two occasions now. Either being present yourself or having
a presenter for a paper is essential for a proposal to move forward. Such a
person can be someone on std-proposals who reacts favorably to your draft,
or you could approach someone who write similar proposals (e.g. an author
of a previous attribute proposal).

Oh, I had no intention of trying for that meeting (Kona, Hawaii?). I
thought it was too late to submit to it anyway. I could try for that
Toronto meeting.

OK, I didn't explain that part (I usually explain it when the actual
document allocation request is submitted): When you request a document
number via the lwgchair address (where we need the following three
tentative informational pieces: Title, Audience, and author list), the
next possible submission deadline is visible on this page:

http://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg21/

Note that this also describes an UTC time point. From this deadline on
the next meeting is the first possible chance to present the proposal.
Regarding usage of "tentative" above: Between the number allocation
and the actual submission you can change any of the three information
pieces, but you should *proactively* inform us when actually
submitting about such a change.

Thanks,

- Daniel

I didn't mean to provide it as Markdown. You'd write it in Markdown, then=
=20
convert it to HTML.

Also, Markdown is *designed* to be legible as plain-text.

<nod> I was overreacting when I read "Have you considered some form of
markup language? Markdown is pretty good" and didn't carefully read
the rest of what you wrote.

Sure, but when I would simply agree to that sentence, I'll promise you
that we get lots of .md files submitted which we don't wish to accept.
And yes, I described the Markdown as plain-text option, but personally
I don't recommend it.

In addition to following the suggestions in that link,

I use markdown, see github.com/tvaneerd/isocpp
I convert it to PDF via markdowntopdf.com

I highly recommend 'before/after' tables. ie on th left show what C++17 cod=
e to solve the problem looks like, and what C++20 code with your addition w=
ould look like on the right.=C2=A0
(that might seem like overkill for an attribute, but it still helps. See gi=
thub.com/tvaneerd/cpp17_in_TTs/attributes.md. )

Hopefully before/after tables will be added to the canonical example propos=
al some day. They really help encapsulate=C2=A0
-summary
-syntax
-motivation

(Sadly, MD doesn't do tables with code very well. I'm still looking for a b=
etter solution to that. =E2=80=8E)

A first guide is given here

https://isocpp.org/std/submit-a-proposal

but I confess that not answers are provided and some information
pieces are missing, so my general recommendation is to contact the
lwgchair address. Usually it will me who will respond to this kind of
request.

The following formats are accepted:

1) pdf
2) html
3) plain text

With plain text we really mean plain text, not MarkDown for example
with an md extension.

Thanks,

- Daniel
